Smallmouth Bass were created to be an angler favorite. They are ferocious predators that pull above their weight class. Smallmouth are good at making themselves at home in most habitats. Lakes, rivers and reservoirs of Montana are home to some robust Smallmouth populations.
Their diet consists of baitfish, crayfish, and both aquatic and terrestrial insects. Because of their huge diet they can be caught on both conventional and fly gear. The fly angler will find success with streamers that mimic fish and crayfish, as well as large grasshopper patters in the heat of the summer. Poppers are the most exiting way to catch Smallmouth and create an unforgettable experience. Conventional gear for Smallmouth is the most efficient way to catch fish. Soft Plastics, square bill crank baits, spinnerbaits, the list goes on. If it looks like food, chances are a Smallie will eat it.
June till mid September are our favorite months for Smallmouth. When the water around Montana gets warm and the trout fishing slows, we turn our full attention to bass. Their metabolism thrives in temperatures from 68-78 degrees. When the water heats up, so does the bass fishing.

Largemouth bass thrive in warm water, something Montana isn't know for. That being said, if you know where to look, there are Largemouth to be caught.
Fly Anglers can catch largemouth bass on most flies in the bag. Streamers are always a good bet. Poppers, Frogs, and Mice are the most fun. Bring your 7 Weight and be ready to test its limits.

While Northern Pike aren't supposed to be in the waters of Western Montana, they like where they ended up. These ambush predators are reckless eaters that sit at the top of the food chain.
Pike present a unique experience to both Fly and Gear anglers alike. Top water flies and lures can entice explosive strikes that can send your heart into overdrive. Swimbaits and Streamers will disappear with a force that can pull a rod out of not expecting hands.
